Motion carousels
Animated Instagram carousels: specs, planning and tips
An animated Instagram carousel is a carousel where every slide is a short video. Here are the official specs, the music rule most guides miss, how to plan one slide by slide, and how to run it as an ad.

An animated Instagram carousel is a carousel post where every slide is a short video instead of a still image. People swipe through it like any carousel, but each slide moves. Brands use them to explain a product, compare options or tell a short story, because motion stops the scroll and the swipe keeps people reading.
This guide covers what the data says about carousels and Reels, the specs that matter, how to plan an animated carousel slide by slide, and how to run one as an ad. The specs come from Instagram's and Meta's own help pages, checked in October 2026.
Animated carousels vs Reels: what the numbers say
You will often read that carousels now beat Reels. Both sides of the data are worth knowing.
- Engagement: Socialinsider's 2026 Instagram benchmarks, based on 35 million posts, put the average engagement rate of carousels at 0.55%, against 0.52% for Reels and 0.37% for single images. Carousels also earned the most saves.
- Reach: Buffer's study of over 4 million posts found Reels reached 36% more people than carousels, while carousels earned 12% more engagement than Reels.
So Reels are better at reaching new people, and carousels are better at holding the people who see them. An animated carousel tries to get some of both: movement to stop the scroll, and slides that give people a reason to keep swiping.
Carousels also get a second chance. Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, has said that when someone sees a carousel but does not swipe, Instagram will often show it to them again, as reported by Social Media Today.
Animated Instagram carousel specs
These are the rules that shape how you build one.
- Up to 20 photos and videos in one carousel, according to the Instagram Help Center. Eight to ten slides is usually enough for one idea.
- Most brands use 1080 by 1350 pixels, the 4:5 portrait size that takes up the most room in the feed.
- You cannot add music to a carousel that contains video, according to the Instagram Help Center. Any sound has to be built into the slide videos before you post.
- Carousel ads take 2 to 10 cards. On the Instagram feed, carousel ads that include video only support a square 1:1 ratio, according to Meta's ads guide.
Instagram does not publish a separate limit for how long each video slide in a normal carousel can be. In practice, 4 to 7 seconds per slide keeps the post moving.
How to plan an animated carousel, slide by slide
A still carousel can be designed one slide at a time. An animated one should be planned as a sequence, because the motion on each slide leads into the next swipe.
- Start with one question your buyers ask. "How do I choose the right size?" or "What is the difference between these two?" is enough for a whole post.
- Slide 1, the cover, makes a promise: what people will know by the last slide. Put the key words in large text and start the motion in the first second.
- Each slide after that makes one point. If a slide needs two sentences to explain, split it in two.
- Let the motion point forward. A product that slides off to the right, a number that keeps counting or an arrow that lands near the edge all make the next swipe feel natural.
- The second-to-last slide sums up, so someone who skipped ahead still gets the point.
- The last slide asks for one action: save it, send it to a friend, or message you.
Write the whole script as a short list before any design starts. Then design the slides as one set, with the same type, colours and pace, so the post feels like one piece.
Sound, captions and readability
Because music cannot be added on Instagram, sound has to be part of each slide: short effects as text lands, a click as a number changes, a whoosh on a transition. Keep the levels steady from slide to slide so the volume does not jump as people swipe.
Many people scroll with the sound off, so every slide must make sense on mute. Keep on-screen text large and short, give each slide enough time to read, and avoid putting key words near the edges, where they can be covered by the like and share buttons.
Using an animated carousel as a Meta ad
The same carousel can run as a paid ad on Facebook and Instagram. Plan a square 1:1 version of each slide for the Instagram feed, since carousel ads with video only support that ratio there. Keep the card count between 2 and 10.
Ads also work better when each card can stand alone, because Meta may show the cards to people who never saw your organic post. Check that the first card explains what the ad is about without the caption.
Common mistakes
- Animating only the cover. If slide 2 is a still image, people stop swiping at slide 2.
- Too much text per slide. One point per slide is easier to read than three.
- Planning to add music in the app. It cannot be added to carousels with video, so build the sound in first.
- Using a 4:5 version for carousel ads on the Instagram feed. Ads with video cards need the square version.
- No clear ending. Without a final slide that asks for something, people simply scroll on.
Frequently asked questions
Can an Instagram carousel have videos?
Yes. A carousel can mix photos and videos, up to 20 items in one post. An animated carousel uses a video for every slide, so each one moves as people swipe through.
Can I add music to an animated Instagram carousel?
No. Instagram does not let you add music to a carousel that contains video. If you want sound, build it into the slide videos before you post, and keep the levels even from slide to slide.
How long should each slide be?
Instagram does not publish a separate limit for each video slide in a normal carousel. Between 4 and 7 seconds works well in practice: long enough to read and watch the motion, short enough that people keep swiping.
Are animated carousels better than Reels?
They do different jobs. In the studies above, Reels reached more people, while carousels earned slightly more engagement and the most saves. Use Reels to reach new people and carousels to explain something people will want to keep.
Can I run an animated carousel as an ad?
Yes. Meta's carousel ads take between 2 and 10 cards, and cards can be videos. On the Instagram feed, carousel ads with video need square 1:1 cards, so prepare a square version of each slide.
